Art lovers have a few more days to catch the most popular annual exhibition at The 806 Coffee + Lounge, 2812 S.W. Sixth Ave.
The 806’s 19th annual Nude Art Show opened Feb. 5 and will be on view through March 3, featuring about 20 revealing new works from Amarillo artists.
“We’re one of the only galleries—and, until recently, the only gallery—in Amarillo that will even allow nude art, much less a show centered around nude art,” said The 806’s Jason Barrett. “A lot of local artists create nude works, and The 806 has always been a safe haven for just about any kind of art, especially when it comes to nude art.”
Nude art, of course, dates back centuries—millennia, even.
“The English language, with its elaborate generosity, distinguishes between the naked and the nude,” art historian Kenneth Clark wrote in The Nude: A Study in Ideal Form in 1956, as cited in an article by Mariko Finch for Sotheby’s. “To be naked is to be deprived of our clothes, and the word implies some of the embarrassment most of us feel in that condition. The word ‘nude,’ on the other hand, carries, in educated usage, no uncomfortable overtone. The vague image it projects into the mind is not of a huddled and defenceless body, but of a balanced, prosperous and confident body: the body re-formed.”
Barrett said his customers and the artists themselves look forward to the exhibition every year.
“It’s always a great show where artists get to come together and actually show work they love but can’t show anywhere else,” he said. “And the public gets a fun and eclectic art experience they can’t find elsewhere.”
