January
Jo Koy: The red-hot comedian makes his Amarillo debut with his “Just Being Koy” tour on Jan. 16 in the Amarillo Civic Center Complex Auditorium, 401 S. Buchanan St. Also hitting town is comic Steve Treviño, bringing his “Good Life Tour” to the Globe-News Center for the Performing Arts on Jan. 11. Other events to watch for are the Amarillo Brick Convention, a Lego fan expo, on Jan. 4 and 5 in the Civic Center Complex; and the controversial Shen Yun dance troupe on Jan. 7 in the Civic Center Complex Auditorium. Plus, don’t miss Amarillo Wranglers hockey matches against the New Mexico Ice Wolves on Jan. 17 and 18, and against the El Paso Rhinos on Jan. 24 and 25, both in the Civic Center Complex Coliseum. The Amarillo Bombers indoor soccer team previews its season on Jan. 11, also in the Civic Center Complex Coliseum.
Dial M for Murder: The play that inspired Alfred Hitchcock’s delicious film noir comes to the Amarillo Little Theatre Allen Shankles MainStage, 2019 Civic Circle. Look out for some great twists and turns as the bodies stack up. Other arts events to check out include Arts in the Sunset’s First Friday Art Walk on Jan. 3; Chamber Music Amarillo’s Centuries of Musical Joy on Jan. 11 at AmTech Career Academy, 3601 Plains Blvd.; Amarillo Symphony’s Beautiful Blue Danube on Jan. 17 and 18 in the Globe-News Center; an exhibition by West Texas A&M University art faculty from Jan. 21 to March 7 in the Dord Fitz Formal Gallery; the WT Opera Gala celebrating Mila Gibson on Jan. 24; the WT Faculty Grand Recital on Jan. 28 in Mary Moody Northen Recital Hall; and a pair of Candlelight Concerts on Jan. 31 on the ALT MainStage.
Broadway’s Rock of Ages Band: The rock-solid musicians behind this hair-band-focused jukebox musical strike out on their own for a Jan. 25 show in the Civic Center Complex Auditorium. Other music to keep your ears up for includes Dani & The Rejects on Jan. 3, JT & The Blacktops on Jan. 4, Kanton Teen & The Penny Pickers on Jan. 10, Logan Ellis on Jan. 11, Tyler John on Jan. 17, Mustang Red on Jan. 18 and Wyly Bigger on Jan. 19 at Hoot’s Pub, 2424 Hobbs Road; Jon Hope & The Jackwagons on Jan. 18 at The Western Horseman, 2501 E. Wolf Man: Leigh Whannell, the talented writer/director behind the last Invisible Man reboot, dips his pen back into the horror realm with this lycanthropic scarefest, opening Jan. 17. Other films opening in January are scheduled to include Den of Thieves 2: Pantera and Better Man on Jan. 10; comedy One of Them Days and historical drama September 5 on Jan. 17; thrillers Flight Risk and Inheritance on Jan. 24; and sci-fi comedy Mickey 17 and family animated film Dog Man on Jan. 31. Special engagements include 40th-anniversary screenings of The Goonies on Jan. 19 and 20.

Amarillo Symphony: The orchestra joins forces with its Youth Orchestra for the grand Mountains and Oceans concerts, featuring Debussy’s La mer and a newly commissioned work, all on Feb. 28 and March 1 in the Globe-News Center. Other arts highlights for the month include WT Theatre’s Artemisia from Feb. 6 to 16 in the Happy State Bank Studio Theatre; ALT’s contemporary musical comedy First Date from Feb. 6 to 16 in the ALT Adventure Space, 2751 Civic Circle; the Palm Royale-themed Symphony Ball on Feb. 8 at the Rex Baxter Building on the Amarillo Tri-State Fairgrounds, 3301 SE 10th Ave.; Amarillo College music faculty’s Jam with Love on Feb. 11 in the AC Concert Hall Theatre; a Chamber Music Amarillo concert featuring woodwind ensemble Elicio Winds on Feb. 15 in the Amarillo Museum of Art, 2200 S. Van Buren St.; and the Harrington String Quartet on Feb. 21, WT Symphony Orchestra’s Music of America on Feb. 22 and the Grace Hamilton Piano Festival on Feb. 28, all in Mary Moody Northen Recital Hall.
The Aluminum Show: This touring show brings together movement, dance and rolls of aluminum foil in what sounds like a one-of-a-kind experience, set for Feb. 4 in the Civic Center Complex Auditorium. Other events to watch for are the Night to Shine fundraiser on Feb. 7 in the Civic Center Complex; the annual Amarillo Tattoo Expo from Feb. 20 to 23 at Ashmore Inn & Suites, 2301 E. Interstate 40; and Family Support Services’ annual Mardi Gras Party on Feb. 22 in the Civic Center Heritage Ballroom. Sports fans should check out Amarillo Bulls hockey matches on Feb. 7 and 8 against the Oklahoma Warriors and Feb. 14 and 15 against the Corpus Christi IceRays, as well as Amarillo Bombers indoor soccer matches against Lansing Red Cedar on Feb. 1 and 2 and the Denver Bucks on Feb. 22, all in the Civic Center Complex Coliseum.
The Powell Brothers: The always entertaining Texas country siblings return to town for a Feb. 7 show at The Western Horseman. Other concerts to tune in for include rapper Paul Wall on Feb. 8 at The Bliss Venue, 9700 Texas Highway 1151.
Captain America: Brave New World: Anthony Mackie takes over Cap’s shield in this anticipated sequel, which features Harrison Ford as the Red Hulk, opening Feb. 14. Other films scheduled to open include mystery comedy Heart Eyes and action comedy Love Hurts on Feb. 7; action drama Cleaner on Feb. 21; drama Last Breath, adventure fantasy The Legend of Ochi and dramedy My Dead Friend Zoe on Feb. 28.
