Amarillo Museum of Art’s most anticipated annual art show celebrates its 20th anniversary by—somehow—getting even bigger.
AMoA’s 20×20 exhibition and reception begins at 6:30 p.m. Thursday at the museum, 2200 S. Van Buren St., and Alex Gregory, the museum’s curator of art, promises more artwork than ever before.
But if you’ve ever been to a 20×20 (or, pre-calendar year 2020, the 12×12), you’ll know that the museum is bursting at the seams even in a non-anniversary year. So how did they find room this year?
“Well, there is a limit, and I think I’m at it,” Gregory said. “We did have a lot more interest in participating in the show (this year), so I also had to turn away more people than I’ve ever had to turn away in the past. It’s a popular, popular show.”
Not only do Amarillo-area artists get a rare opportunity to display their work in a museum environment, they also get to split profits from the sale of their pieces with the museum. “It’s mutually beneficial,” Gregory said.
Each piece must measure 20 inches by 20 inches (by 20 inches if it’s a three-dimensional piece), and Gregory said the show will have something for everyone, from paintings to sculpture to ceramics to glass to photography.
The online silent auction is open now through 8:30 p.m. Thursday.
