There’s no shortage of Halloween and Día de los Muertos events to choose from this weekend, but if you’re looking for the biggest, check out these options.
The SanJac Coalition’s annual 6th Street Creepy Crawl will kick off at 6 p.m. Friday along Historic Route 66. Family-friendly activities will run through 8 p.m., with adult playtime from 9 p.m. to 2 a.m.
Tons of music options are available at Nina Lune Art Gallery, Old Tascosa Brewing Company, The 806 Coffee + Lounge, Broken Spoke Lounge, RR Bar and Golden Light Cantina. Punch cards, available for $15, offer users gifts, free drinks, discounts and more. A kids’ costume contest will be held at 8 p.m. at The Garage, with adults competing at midnight at the Golden Light.
Other entertainment offerings include pumpkin painting and a gothic fashion show at Idol Art Studio; the Miss Creepy Crawl Queen Pin-Up Pageant at the Golden Light; and trick-or-treating all along the street.
Proceeds benefit the San Jacinto Community Center.
Then, the Amarillo Council for the Latino Arts will host its third Día de los Muertos Festival, slated to run from noon to 8 p.m. Saturday at Starlight Ranch Event Center, 1415 Sunrise Drive.
“Día de los Muertos, or Day of the Dead, is a tradition that’s been celebrated in Mexico for generations,” says Salvador Ray, ACLA president. “It’s not about mourning, it’s about remembering, honoring and celebrating the lives of our loved ones who have passed away.”
The event, ACLA’s largest fundraiser, will feature live music, an art show with more than 60 artists, food trucks, vendors, kids’ activities, cultural workshops, and the Catrina and Catrín costume contests.
“Everything, from the art installations to the performances, is created by local talent and community volunteers,” Ray says. “Hosting the festival helps bring visibility to ACLA’s mission and to the incredible creativity that exists right here in Amarillo. It shows what can happen when artists, families and businesses come together to celebrate culture in a meaningful, inclusive way.”
Admission is free.
