Hoodoo Mural Festival returns Saturday for a second year at its new home, Arts in the Sunset.
“It is just a fun-filled day where people can watch art being made, watch the muralists painting, enjoy music by not only local bands, but also pretty up-and-coming, outstanding artists. And then we have really fun, interactive activities. So it’s definitely family friendly,” said Rachel Flores, Arts in the Sunset executive director and Hoodoo board member.
Several nationally known muralists will create new works of art on the walls at Arts in the Sunset and, in the next several weeks, in other locations around the city, including the Amarillo Zoo, Margaret WIlls Elementary School and, if everything works out, on the side of a Maverick Boys & Girls Club bus, Flores said.
“One of the things we wanted to do differently this wear was to have more murals that were community-focused. We don’t just want to forever put them on the walls at Arts in the Sunset,” Flores said. “We wanted to make sure that we were doing the meaningful murals that we were trying to accomplish this year, even if they don’t get painted during the week of Hoodoo.”
The festival also will feature music on two stages and inside the Vermillion Gallery, the Brick & Elm Food Truck Alley, and booths from area vendors and nonprofits.
The party runs from 3 to 10 p.m. Saturday. Tickets are $25 plus fees or $125 plus fees for VIP tickets.
Kicking things off is a “Meet the Muralists” panel discussion at 6 p.m. Friday featuring artists Megan Oldhues, Egypt Hagan, Anna Charney, Christian Stanley, Clayton Spaulding, Raela Ornelas and Shanda Fletcher, facilitated by Brick & Elm co-publisher Jason Boyett. Admission is free, and Redd & The Paper Flowers will perform following the panel. Food trucks Coach’s Cocina and the Tap Truck will provide food and drinks for the evening.
