Now that fall has arrived, it’s not just the aroma of pumpkin spice that’s in the air: This week marks the arrival of some of Amarillo’s most beloved fall traditions.
Amarillo Scaregrounds’ five attractions—Terror, Insanitarium, The Basement, B Trail and the Xcape Room Village—officially open following last week’s preview night. About 50,000 square feet of horrors await visitors to the long-running attraction, located at 2736 SW 10th Ave. Hours are 7:30 to 11:30 p.m. Fridays and Saturdays through Nov. 1. Sixth Street Massacre is based out of a historic building on Route 66, specifically 3015 SW Sixth Ave., and purports to be a sought-after location for paranormal hunters. It opens Oct. 4, then offers scares Oct. 10-11, 17-19, 24-26 and 30-31. Hours are 7 p.m. to midnight. Admission is $30. Call 806-337-0749.
Head out of town for one of the area’s most recent additions, The Haunt at Sundown, 1201 S. Sundown Lane. The gnarly farm is open 7:30 to 11 p.m. Fridays and Saturdays, plus Oct. 26, 30 and 31 and Nov. 1. Admission is $20. Email adeal777@suddenlink.net.
Family-friendly fun also is available at Maxwell’s Pumpkin Farm, 12908 S. Bell St. (Saturdays and Sundays through Nov. 2, with the Frightful Fields attraction returning Oct. 27 to 31) and Gee’s Family Farms, 7651 S. Whitaker Road (Saturdays through Oct. 25).
Amarillo Museum of Art’s AMoA Biennial 600 opens Saturday, featuring art in an array materials and genres. Juror Rachel Zebro and artists Tristram Lansdowne and Ryan Crowley will offer gallery talks during the opening reception, which opens at 6 p.m. Saturday at the museum, 2200 S. Van Buren St. Zebro will discuss how she selected the exhibition’s works, which were submitted by artists residing within a 600-mile radius of Amarillo. The opening reception is free for museum members and $15 for nonmembers. The exhibition itself will be on view through Jan. 4. Call 806-371-5050.
Movie options this week include a biopic that’s winning major Oscar buzz for its star.
The Smashing Machine stars Dwayne Johnson as MMA star Mark Kerr, with Emily Blunt costarring as girlfriend Dawn Staples. Johnson (who’s not using “The Rock” for this one, so you know he’s serious) is getting raves as the film makes the festival circuit. It’s set to open at both Cinemark Hollywood 16, 9100 Canyon Drive, and Cinergy, 9201 Cinergy Square.
Also opening is Taylor Swift: The Official Release Party of a Showgirl. And, look for special engagements of the original Spider-Man trilogy, the biographical documentary Satisfied about Hamilton star Renée Elise Goldsberry, Avatar: The Way of Water and 50th-anniversary screenings of The Rocky Horror Picture Show.
