Whether it’s late brunch, a slow lunch, or the prelude to dinner, there are moments when hunger strikes, but decision-making falters. Perhaps it’s the midday lull between service shifts, the distraction of meaningful—or mercifully meaningless—conversation, or the particular haze of a summer afternoon when nothing sounds good and everything feels like too much. In such moments, when the mind is nutrient-starved and the menu suddenly reads like a novella, it helps to have a fallback. One that’s satisfying, accessible and restorative. One that, should a more talented imagination conjure a better reason than those listed here, still holds up.
Fortunately, such a meal exists—expertly executed and quietly reliable—at Amarillo’s Cellar 55.
This relatively new addition to Civic Circle doesn’t try to mimic the Wolflin neighborhood bistros that came before it, though certain core menu items nod in their direction. There’s a sense of culinary memory at play—faint echoes of once-beloved dishes, now refined and recast for a new dining generation. The menu features surf and turf, cleverly dressed handhelds, bacon compelling enough to be its own appetizer, and side dishes with enough presence to steal focus from the mains. The extensive wine and cocktail selection adds versatility, while the restaurant’s collegial atmosphere shifts easily from business lunch to celebratory dinner, cocktail hour to late
afternoon recovery. Even off-hours cravings—those murky stretches when the body wants fuel and the mind demands ease—are welcome here.
Familiar staples are treated with thoughtfulness. Cellar 55’s Caesar salad, for instance, doesn’t merely go through the motions. Romaine hearts arrive cool and crisp, chopped to a balanced bite and dressed in a house-made blend that leans boldly into garlic and anchovy without veering harsh. Parmesan lends a nutty edge, and house-made croutons add a golden crunch—lightly toasty, never heavy. What could be basic feels polished, especially when paired with a martini and the din of lively tables nearby—a simple dish elevated by intent.
Cellar 55’s house salad offers a more colorful approach. It’s layered with chopped egg, smoky bacon crumbles, bright tomato wedges, red onion, and capers over a crisp mix of romaine and spring greens. It’s topped with the same croutons and dressed with a gently acidic vinaigrette that holds everything in balance. This isn’t a garnish to a larger meal—it’s a standalone moment of fresh, textured satisfaction. And then there are the waffle fries: unapologetically golden, lightly seasoned, and crisp in all the right places. The lattice cut offers a pleasing contrast between airy interiors and shattering edges, making them as snackable as they are shareable. They’re casual, playful, and—when paired with a glass of something sparkling—just indulgent enough to feel like a minor act of rebellion.
For something heartier, Cellar 55’s Sweet Tea Fried Chicken delivers comfort with a knowing wink. Brined until each bite is saturated with subtle sweetness and citrus, the chicken arrives encased in a perfectly crisp crust that gives way to impossibly juicy meat. A drizzle of peppery Alabama white sauce adds sharpness and tang, grounding the dish. It’s served with buttery mashed potatoes and Cellar Brussels sprouts roasted to a smoky, caramelized finish—familiar accompaniments, handled with finesse.
The bleu cheese risotto makes no apologies. It’s creamy and decadent, with the arborio rice holding its shape in a rich, tangy base that lets the cheese shine without tipping into excess. There’s a touch of salt, a whisper of cream, and just enough restraint to keep things from going over the top. It’s a side dish that plays like a lead.
Between the refined plating, warm service, and an atmosphere that balances easy charm with subtle sophistication, Cellar 55 offers more than a meal—it provides a mood. The menu meets the moment, whether it’s steak night, salad and fries with a martini or a well-earned pause in the day.
