About halfway through their meal, my dining companion, apropos of nothing, said, “This is the best burger I’ve had in a long time.” While that may be high praise anywhere on the map, it’s a true accomplishment in Amarillo.
The Brunch Truck launched as a food truck several years back. Since then, its popularity has propelled it to establish a brick-and-mortar cafe right near where people who knew it “way back when” might remember the truck being parked—not far from the former bus station, where a brunch-craving crowd would flock to get their fill of owner and Chef Paul Olivarez’s imaginative offerings. The cafe represents the culmination of building a faithful following by providing many years of brunch service.
The cafe is quaint, just a few tables, flooded in sunshine pouring through the large front windows. The small and friendly staff keeps the vibe light, chatting with regulars, tidying up and humming along with the pop (or sometimes disco!) music playing in the background.
Whatever dietary needs diners have, the Brunch Truck Cafe can happily accommodate–almost any entree can be made vegan, vegetarian or gluten-free. If the only requirement is that the food is tasty, Paul’s got you covered there, too.
The aforementioned “best burger I’ve had in a long time,” is the French Onion Swiss Mushroom Burger. The burger patty is crowned with red onion and mushrooms sautéed in a french onion soup reduction, covered with slices of swiss cheese. Its savory swagger is tamed by the addition of lettuce and tomato, which bring crisp and brightness to a truly luscious dish.
Sometimes, simplicity is all that’s needed to make a great meal and a great impression. The Brunch Truck Cafe offers an unfussy bun-burger patty-lettuce-tomato-pickles-onion burger, too. Cheese and bacon are available as add-ons, and all burgers are served with chips.
The Famous Kitchen Sink Burrito is a hearty, no-holds-barred breakfast masterpiece. A warm, 10-inch tortilla wraps around a generous filling of Yukon Gold potatoes, melted shredded cheese, diced ham, smoked bacon, and savory sausage. To top it all off, two fresh, over-medium eggs bring rich, velvety goodness to every bite. It’s no surprise this is The Brunch Truck’s best-selling item—every ingredient comes together for a bold, satisfying start to the day.
The Brunch Truck Cafe’s enchilada plate is a comforting, flavor-packed classic, featuring your choice of two beef or cheese enchiladas smothered in its famous, can’t-miss sauce. Enriqueta’s sauce is rich, verdant, bright and creamy. It truly sets the dish apart, bringing everything together with its unforgettable taste. A generous sprinkle of shredded cheese melts over the top, and hearty beans and rice make it a satisfying, well-rounded meal. To top it off, the enchiladas are served with both rojo and verde salsa on the side, perfect for adding an extra kick of spice and freshness to every bite.
Try the Brunch Mac and Cheese (shown above) for a hearty, indulgent twist to a classic favorite. Curly pasta is coated in a smooth, creamy béchamel sauce, creating a rich and comforting base. Fluffy scrambled eggs and crispy bacon are layered on top, adding a savory touch and a bit of crunch. Whether it’s your first meal of the day or a midday treat, this dish is a warm and flavorful way to enjoy brunch
The Brunch Truck Cafe has several specials throughout the week, like Inflation Thursday where featured dishes and drinks are served at a discount. If you’ve got time to stay a while, beer, wine and mimosas are also available on site. For a brunch worth remembering—this is the place.
