Fall is right around the corner, y’all! And with it comes the chance for us to satisfy our cravings for pumpkin spice everything. Whether you are a lover (that’s me) or loather of the delicious spice combination, it’s here and ready to rock your world for a few months. So please don’t try to fight it. I mean, come on … it’s everywhere!

That cozy, delicious scent wafts between the holiday aisles at Michael’s. It plumes out from the drive-thru window at your favorite local coffee shop. It tugs at your pant leg as you pass the pumpkin spice pound cake at the grocery store. Why does it want our attention so dang bad?

For one, it conveys a sense of coziness, kick-starting nostalgia from past fall seasons, family gatherings, falling leaves, and cooler weather. Although the Texas Panhandle weather has shown no interest in cooling us off just yet, I’m certain we can all find a way to enjoy the nicest spice around.

However, I have a bone to pick with whoever makes us all wait two-thirds of the year to coat our insides with its coziness. Scarcity creates demand, it seems. But I’m not willing to wait. Why should you? Here is an easy mix you can make at home to add to your baked goods or a piping hot cup of java.

1 ½ teaspoons ground allspice
3 tablespoons ground cinnamon1
½ teaspoons ground clove
2 teaspoons ground nutmeg
2 teaspoons ground cardamom

Combine all the ingredients and store in an airtight container for up to a year. Use seasoning to taste.

In the meantime, enjoy its availability. Get your pumpkin spice fix and continue to support those local coffee shops and bakeries. Make that yummy pumpkin-flavored ginger trifle. Fight those women in the candle aisle for the biggest one. Call me if you need backup.
