Do you smell fragrant fried grease, silky powdered sugar and meaty turkey legs in the air?
Yes, it’s time again for the Amarillo Tri-State Fair and Rodeo, which for some people means country concerts, ropin’ and wranglin’ rodeos, or plentiful produce, but for me, it means the return of the greatest food court in town.
Years ago, for another media outlet, I tried to eat my way through the fair, sampling a turkey leg, fried ice cream, Indian tacos, curly fries and much, much, MUCH more. I’ll never do that again, but the siren call of cheese on a stick is so hard to resist.
Fairgoers also should check out the Dancin’ in the Dirt concert featuring area native Randall King at 7 p.m. Sept. 13, the midway rides, daily entertainment offerings and more. It all goes down on the historic fairgrounds at 3301 SE 10th Ave. Fair hours are 11 a.m. to 10:30 p.m. daily Sept. 12 to 20, with the carnival open until midnight. Ticket prices vary, but admission is free until 3 p.m. weekdays — all the better to eat your weight in fried food.

Amarillo food trucks will compete at the second War of the Wagons, set for 6 p.m. Sept. 5 at the Texas Panhandle War Memorial, 4111 S. Georgia St. The event doubles as a mental-health fair, co-hosted by the VA Amarillo Healthcare Center and Easy Thoughts mental health organization. Enjoy a slew of food, enter a raffle to win historic weaponry, and see who wins the battle of the trucks at the free event.
The Amarillo Symphony and Panhandle PBS team for “A Night in the Highlands: A Symphony of Scotch and Sound.” The event—set for 6 p.m. Sept. 11 at the Panhandle PBS studios, 2408 S. Jackson St.—will immerse attendees in Scottish culture, from beautiful music to pub fare to premium whiskey.

Texas Panhandle Builders Association’s annual Wing Wars returns at 5 p.m. Sept. 13, with top area cooks battling it out to determine who offers the best bite-sized chickeny goodness. Cooks will compete for awards decided by both attendees and a panel of judges, and proceeds benefit Amarillo Habitat for Humanity.

Summer’s not quite over, so there’s still time to hit the beach for Shark Beach Burgers’ Sandcastle Days. The new, family-friendly event promises sandcastles built by both world-class and local artists, along with live music, vendors, food and more. The party runs Sept. 18 to 21 at the beachy restaurant, 1505 E. FM 1151.
